Condemning the government’s action of arresting people for joining the Save Mhadei agitation, Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat on Wednesday warned that the government will have to face serious repercussions if it tries to suppress the genuine agitation launched by the people of Goa to save Mhadei river.
Addressing the media, Kamat warned that the government should not try to suppress the Mhadei movement when people have been agitating democratically in support of its just and genuine demand.
“I want to tell the government that the movement will take huge proportions if any attempt is made to suppress the agitation. People of Goa are agitating for a just and genuine demand. Congress president Girish Chodankar and others were protesting near Inox and the government arrested them. This is unfair and unjustified,” he said, adding that three of the party workers were also arrested and their whereabouts remain unknown thus far. Saying that the government had imposed Section 144 of the Cr P C to suppress the agitation under the guise of maintain law and order situation ahead of the Supreme Court judgement on Ayodhya, Kamat demanded the immediate withdrawal of the provision. Saying that the Centre has done great injustice to Goa by not withdrawing the letter issued to Karnataka, the Opposition Leader said the minimum Union Minister Prakash Javdekar could have done was to keep the letter in abeyance.
Saying that the Congress never did politics on Mhadei issue, Kamat said he had joined the all-party delegation to Javdekar when the opposition had demanded a one-day session on the issue and to seek an appointment with the Prime Minister.
When questioned why the Congress did not stage a dharna near the IFFI venue on the day of the inauguration, Kamat said IFFI was an international is attended by international delegates. “In the past, I had faced such as situation. Hence, our Congress president and workers decided to protest near Inox,” he added.
