Has the Margao Municipal Council put in place a mechanism to collect waste door-to-door from the 11 municipal wards coming under Fatorda constituency with the incumbent contractor bracing to quit the job from February 1?

With just a day to go for January to end and the contractor adamant on quitting the job, all eyes are focused on Margao Municipal Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar and chairperson Pooja Naik as lack of an alternate arrangement in place for waste collection in the 11 municipal wards can lead to chaos

and throw the system out of gear.

As things stand today, the garbage contractor who had given notice to stop the operation by January 15,

had continued with the job after being persuaded by chairperson Pooja Naik and the CO on the condition that the civic body would look out for an alternative from February 1.

The Goan understands that the Margao municipality has not finalized any other contractor to carry out the job of door-to-door waste collection in the 11 wards. On the other hand, the incumbent contractor has conveyed his inability to continue the operations after January 31.

Fortunately for the Margao Municipal Council, the contractor had promised to assist the civic body to take over the door-to-door waste collection operations, promising to give his manpower, including workers and supervisors at the disposal of the civic body.

The contractor is believed to have told the chairperson that he would lend all assistance to the civic body to ensure smooth operations of the door-to-door waste collection in the Fatorda area by placing his manpower at the disposal of the Civic body.

Sources in the know said that it’s now left for the MMC Chairperson and the Chief Officer to take a call on the offer from the contractor, whether to take his manpower or not.

While the Fatorda area comprising of 11 wards was manned by the incumbent contractor, waste from the Margao households was managed by a separate contractor, with occasional support from the Margao Municipal workers.

150 daily wage workers still await formal work order

MARGAO: With just two days to for curtains to come down on the current month, Margao Municipal daily wage workers engaged on garbage work are still awaiting the formal order from the Civic body engaging them for the work.

The daily wage garbage workers, numbering 150, appeared an anxious lot, as they are yet to receive the order engaging them for work though they have been putting in work of garbage collection for the current month.

It’s yet unclear why the Civic body has delaying in issuing the order to these daily wage workers when they have been putting in the work, with a lower official only saying the file is lying in the chamber of the Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar.  Sources informed that a group of workers reportedly called on the Municipal Chairperson Pooja Naik with a plea to resolve the issue at the earliest as they might not receive their daily wage for the month of January in the event the municipality does not issue the order immediately.
