With transportation of city waste to the Sonsodo site coming to a standstill for the second day on Tuesday, door-to-door waste collection from the city households also came to a halt on Tuesday.
Citizens cried foul as waste collectors played truant as the bins filled with waste remained uncollected on Tuesday. Waste bins were lying at the doorsteps of the citizens throughout Tuesday,
forcing the citizens to take the bins back inside their
households.
A couple of citizens, however, raised a banner of protest at Borda, demanding to know how they can store their wet waste inside the households for more than a day. They fear that the waste will rot and raise a stink inside their houses, causing nuisance.
MMC officials, however, tried to convince the agitated citizens, seeking a day’s time to sort out the issue. They pointed out that the civic body will resume collection of waste door to door either on Tuesday evening or Wednesday.
Even as MMC officials handed out the promise to resolve the issue by Wednesday, citizens, however, preferred to keep their fingers crossed, aware that the situation will not change for the better unless the civic body lifts the waste rejects from the plant and Fomento decides to accept segregated waste.
Meanwhile, a couple of MMC garbage trucks were spotted picking up waste from the wholesale and retail fish markets, with sources saying the waste will be taken to Sonsodo for disposal.
