After a nine-month gap of keeping vacant the chairperson’s post at State Women’s Commission (SWC), Dr Vidya Gawde has finally been selected as the chairperson. The Directorate of Women and Child Welfare has appointed Dr Gawde as the chairperson of SWC under Women’s Commission Act 1996.
The post was vacant for the past nine months and the former chairperson of the Commission as well as social activists had appealed to the government to appoint someone immediately. The post remained unfilled after Purti Patkar had resigned from the chairperson’s post in November 2019. While resigning from the post, Patkar had not submitted the reason for doing so. As such, the complaints from women could not be heard.
During the past nine months, the commission had received numerous complaints of domestic and other types of violence and these women used to visit on and off to seek justice, but nothing could be done.
