A car driver died while a woman and her minor son had a narrow escape when the car slid down from the Sarmanas ferry point at Pilgao-Bicholim and plunged into the river late Tuesday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Yatin Mayekar (29) from Dhabdhaba-Bicholim, while Yashasri Korgaonkar and her son Aeen (12) managed to jump out of the car in the nick of time.
According to Bicholim police, a couple and their son were travelling towards the Karmali railway station via the Sarmanas-Tonca ferry route in a car driven by Mayekar.
There was a long queue of vehicles at the Tonca ferry route and there was a possibility that the Korgaonkar family could miss their train.
Yashasri’s husband, Amit, then alighted from the car and went to request the driver of the car ahead in the queue to give them a chance to get inside a ferry.
At that moment, Mayekar is believed to have suffered some seizure and lost control of the car. The vehicle slid down the ferry wharf. Yashasri managed to open the door and she along with her son jumped out of the car in the nick of time.
The car went into the river and Mayekar drowned in the mishap.
A team from the Bicholim fire service later went to the site and pulled the car from the river. The body of the driver was retrieved from the vehicle and was sent to the GMC hospital at Bambolim for an autopsy.
Bicholim police are further investigating into the matter under the supervision of PI Rahul Naik.
