A 36-year-old Mumbai woman died after an allegedly drunk and unlicensed driver rammed an outstation Mahindra Scorpio into the scooter she was riding pillion on NH-66 at Colvale on Saturday evening.
The deceased, Akansha Bhansali, was travelling towards Pernem with her husband Kalpesh Jain and daughter on a Fascino scooter when the Scorpio, allegedly being driven rashly and negligently, hit the two-wheeler from behind while overtaking.
According to Colvale police, the Scorpio was driven by David Gabriel Mohite (36), a resident of Miraj, Sangli, Maharashtra. Police alleged that Mohite was under the influence of alcohol and did not possess a valid driving licence.
The accident occurred around 5.30 pm opposite Ghotneshwar Temple, when Mohite was proceeding from Karaswada, Mapusa, towards Pernem. The impact left Akansha with serious head injuries. She was rushed to Goa Medical College, Bambolim, where she later succumbed.
Jain and their daughter also sustained injuries.
Police registered a case against Mohite under Sections 281, 125(a) and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 3 read with 181 and 175 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Mohite was issued a notice under Section 35(3) of the BNSS, directing him to appear before the investigating officer on October 5.
