Speaking to media, DSE employee’s association president Audrey Fernandes said the management has not responded to their request for a meeting.
“We’re a total of 4,000 employees working in 80 institutions from primary to college. We wrote to the management four times in the past for a meeting but they have not met us yet. This silent protest organized today by the core group was just to highlight that we want to be heard,” said Fernandes.
Their major grievance was with regards to refusal of Child Care Leave (CCL) to the women employees. According to the law, since the DSE receives grant from the State government, a replacement is provided to the institution along with the salary for both. But the association has claimed this isn’t the case and are being denied CCL.
The Association has also said that employees were not given confirmation letters for years together. Several employees who worked with DSE have been on probation for eight years and were denied confirmation letters. As per service rules, employees are given confirmation letters after two years on probation.
Fernandes also said employees were being victimised and transferred from one school to another for raising issues that concerned them. They have also criticized the DSE’s decision to reduce the extraordinary leave from six years, to two years.
“In the past we have tried to raise our issues with the government. We had met with the Director of Education and Higher Education, who had promised action against the management. But till date, nothing has come of those meetings,” said Fernandes.
The plan, she said was to wait a couple of days for the management to respond failing which, they would intensify their protests.
