MARGAO
Beware! The Big Brother is watching at garbage dumping spots in Carmona village.
In fact, the village Panchayat of Carmona has gone high-tech in the field of garbage management by setting up various sophisticated CCTV camera online surveillance systems at crucial locations to tackle the menace of garbage dumping and littering on its major roads.
Sarpanch Allwyn Jorge said so far 20 CCTV cameras have been installed at a cost of Rs 3.08 lakh and the panchayat is monitoring the village roads at crucial locations. He said village Panchayat members have resolved to install more such cameras at various other points too.
“The main MDR road passing through Carmona was often a target for dumping garbage by migrant workers, tourists, etc and was a cause of friction between neighbouring villages. Installation of CCTV cameras was on persistent demand from the gram sabha members to tackle this menace. The CCTV surveillance systems allows us to monitor our roads 24 x 7 by means of mobile apps while the DVR continuously records the footage whereby we have started a system of checking the footage on a daily basis to see if any untoward incident has taken place in the village. In our office too, all the cameras give a continuous 24x7 feed which helps us to monitor the scene remotely also”, he said.
Apart from usage for garbage violations, the cameras serve as a security measure for our villagers who can be assured of safety & security day and night, he added.
“So far, post-installation of these systems we have not had a single incident of littering on our major roads as the cameras serve as a deterrent to the habitual violators although we maintain once a week schedule pick up of any routine litter on our roads. Garbage dumping involves a minimum fine of Rs 5000 and this will be substantiated by evidence in case required to file a police complaint against the defaulters. Large warning signs will be put up at all the borders of the villages”, Allwyn said, adding “these systems if fitted by other villages also should solve the problem of garbage dumping on the roads and also give a means of security cover for the people of the villages”.
