PANAJI: The e-challan system will be operational in Goa within a month as the government on Thursday finally gave its approval for implementation of the system proposed by the police department.
With this new system, traffic violators will be able to pay the fine on the spot as traffic police will be equipped with Point of Sale (POS) machines.
The police department has been trying to implement this system from December 2018, but financial concurrence and delay in approval delayed the procedure.
“On February 28, we got the approval of the government to start e-challan system in Goa,” informed DGP Muktesh Chander. Thanks to the new system, traffic violators can avoid standing in long queues at the nearest regional transport office and pay the fine to the nearest on-duty traffic inspector instead simply by scanning the QR code on the e-challan.Payments will be accepted via ATM/debit cards or credit cards as well as through e-wallets and other apps.
This cashless system will thus ensure transparency in transactions and help the police maintain an electronic database of violations.
According to sources, the e-challan system may be integrated with the traffic sentinel scheme at a later date.
SP Traffic Dinraj Govekar said that Axis Bank has been finalised for the implementation of the e-challan system. All costs for the procedure will be borne by the bank itself. The government will not pay anything to the bank.
“It is expected that the procedure to procure equipment and all necessary arrangements will be done in one month,” said Govekar.
The police plan to introduce 400 devices in the initial stage.
