An 80-year-old man from Chandor died after being hit by a moving train on the Margao–Chandor railway line on Tuesday evening. Police said Vasco Railway Police Station received information through a written note from the deputy station master of Vasco railway station, based on a report from the loco pilot of a passing train. The information was later confirmed by a pointsman of the South Western Railway.
During enquiries, railway police found an elderly man lying beside the track at kilometre 76/400 on the Margao–Chandor section. He was identified as Joaquim Estibeiro (80), a resident near the Government Primary School, New Township, Chandor. He had suffered severe injuries and was declared dead at the spot. His identity was confirmed by his nephew.
Preliminary enquiries suggest Estibeiro was either walking along or crossing the track when he was struck by the train. The body was shifted to the District Hospital, Margao, for medico-legal procedures. A case of unnatural death has been registered, and further enquiries are underway. Railway police have urged the public to avoid walking on or crossing railway tracks due to safety risks.
