The election observer Shella Marak who was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle during her morning walk in the capital on Friday, underwent a head surgery and is said to be recovering now.
Four police officials including a police sub-inspector have been put on guard duty at the Goa Medical College, Bambolim where Marak is admitted.
Meanwhile police have identified the driver of the vehicle one Premanand Vernekar from Campal and have registered an offence against him under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.
Shella Marak, an IAS officer from the North East and posted in Goa as an observer at the just concluded election, had been staying at Panjim Residency. She was out for a morning walk at around 7 am when she was hurt in an accident between two cars near the Panjim ferry wharf promenade.
She suffered head injuries and was immediately shifted to the GMC, Bambolim.
On the day of the accident she was not accompanied by any other person or personal security officer. On not finding her at her accommodation, the authorities panicked and her PSO informed the superiors. Thereafter it was discovered that she had been admitted to the GMC.
The North Goa Collector R Meneka then issued directions to mamlatdars and joint-mamlatdars to attend to her security and other needs during her hospitalisation.
