Though there are no Goa specific intelligence inputs top police officials have instructed officers down the ranks to be on alert as a precautionary measure in the wake of reports that boats carrying terrorists have set sail from Sri Lanka for the Lakshwadeep islands.

The Kerala coast has been put on high alert since May 23 following the intelligence reports that the boats allegedly carrying 15 Islamic State terrorists had set sail from Sri Lanka to the Lakshadweep islands. Goa’s 105-kilometer coastline is in close proximity to the coast in Kerala and there is regular traffic of fishing vessels between the two States.

According to top police officials the State’s coastal police stations and district police chiefs have been alerted.

“There is no Goa specific specific information but as normal practice we have alerted the coastal police stations and the two districts to be on alert in case of any sighting of suspicious vessels,” a top police officer said. Sri Lanka witnessed a deadly terror attack on April 21 when eight blasts rocked the Island nation killing over 250 people. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the incident.

After the serial bomb blasts in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, Kerala has been on high alert.
