Clogged drains, waste dumped in the market passages and footpaths, encroachments in the passages and wild bushes on the pedestrian footpath et al greeted the chairman of South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) Wilfred D’Sa as he inspected the PDA retail market on Wednesday.
Accompanied by PDA officials, including Member Secretary Ashok Kumar, Wilfred made his presence felt at the PDA-run retail fish, vegetable and fruit market on Wednesday noon, only to be greeted with the clogged drains, encroachments and other issues plaguing the market.
As Wilfred visited the retail fish market, which was renovated around a year ago on the lines of Dubai, he came across damaged tiles in the market and also found the ceiling material hanging. Fish market vendors also conveyed their issues and problems to the PDA chairman.
The PDA chairman came across wild bushes on the pedestrian footpath all around the retail market, only indicating that the footpath is not put to use by the pedestrians and customers alike.
He came across the worst situation in the vegetable market as the market passages were being used to store goods by traders. The PDA chairman questioned how come the passages have been encroached by the vendors and demanded to know about the waste lying along the market footpath.
The PDA chairman later told The Goan that the PDA will call the contractor, who had executed work on the renovation of the retail fish market on the lines of the Dubai fish market to discuss issues of maintenance of the
market.
On the footpaths around the market complex, the PDA chairman said it is clear that the broad footpaths are not put to use by the customers, adding that the PDA will take a call whether these spaces can be converted for vehicular parking to tide over the acute parking problem in the market.
