Unhappy about the waste and garbage bins placed near power transformers at various locations in Vasco, power officials have requested the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to maintain cleanliness and hygiene around transformers in the city.
Speaking to reporters, a power official said the department had earlier written to MMC about cleanliness of areas near transformers.
“Today, sites near transformers at most locations have become garbage dumping site. Heaps of garbage are found and people also urinate there, making it practically impossible for our staff to attend to the transformer.”
“Sometimes we undertake work and our vehicles cannot be parked at these site to carry out any work,” said the officer, while requesting anonymity.
“Recently, there was a huge fire at a transformer box in the crowded Vasco Municipal market. It was basically because an establishment had dumped empty wooden boxes and packaging cartons near the transformer box that caught fire and it later spread to the transformer box.”
“This can be dangerous and dry waste should not be allowed to be piled near transformers. I urge the MMC to take this issue on priority,” said the official.
When contacted, newly elected MMC Chairperson Bhavna Nanoskar assured to act in the matter.
“Since I have taken over recently, I am unaware of any formal or official request from the electricity department. I will now ensure that places are cleaned up.”
“It was actually the duty of every ward councillor to ensure the cleanliness of his/her ward and see to it that no garbage is scattered at places like electrical transformers.”
“I will undertake a cleanliness drive and will also inform all councillors to maintain cleanliness in their respective wards, especially near electricity transformers,” assured Nanoskar.
