Four municipal councils fail to utilise even a single rupee from the funds

However, the The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has managed to utilise the entire grant of Rs 5 crore, while eight municipal councils have partly utilised the grant, revealed information received from the Directorate of Municipal Administration.
The State Government has now given a final deadline till September, this year, to the municipal councils to utilise the grants, failing which they will have to be returned to the State government.
The four municipal councils - Mormugao, Canacona, Pernem and Sankhali “ have failed to utilise a single rupee from the golden jubilee grants allocated to them. Mormugao Municipal Council was given grant-in-aid of Rs 3 crore, Canacona Rs 2 crore, while Pernem and Sankhali were given Rs 1 crore each for creating signature infrastructure projects in their respective areas.
As per the information received from the office of the Directorate of Municipal Administration, Margao Municipal Council had received a grant of Rs 3 crore of which only Rs 31.60 lakh has been utilised for the pay-parking project, i.e. construction of multi-storage parking plaza on the land of the old fish market behind municipal office building.
The Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council received Rs 2 crore of which Rs 48.11 lakh have been utilised for publishing tender notice, appointment of consultancy charges for the project of designing administrative building. Nonetheless, the council has transferred an amount of Rs 1.51 crore to the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA).
Cuncolim Municipal Council, which received Rs 2 crore, has managed to utilise nearly Rs 40 lakh for the development of the Chieftain Memorial Garden.
A fortnight ago, CM Manohar Parrikar and Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza in a meeting advised the local bodies to utilise the grants, failing which these would be taken back.
