Energised with the inclusion of Belagavi city among the first 20 smart cities, the administrative machinery of Belagavi city has geared up for implementation of the long-cherished developmental goals, which is also intended to benefit visitors from Goa.
The first and the prime one being the development of 18-km commercial corridor in the city.
Addressing media persons, CCB Commissioner G Prabhu and district in-charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi said, “Keeping in mind the local residents and the increasing number of visitors from Goa, a specific proposal has been prepared by the city corporation authorities. About 2,600 acres from Ramteerth Nagar to Vaccine Depot in Tilakwadi has been included for area-based development.”
Open spaces and land alongside the double road has been selected, where best of the infrastructural facilities including five multi-utility centers will be set up. As the double road passes through the heart of north and south of Belagavi, the 18-km stretch will now become the most sought after commercial corridor in the region.
“We have also taken up a project in the Vaccine Depot in Tilakwadi area, where a sprawling 160 acres will be developed as a 'Heritage Park,'” CCB commissioner G Prabhu said, which means apart from retaining its identity as the lung space for green Belagavi, the park will also serve as solace for tourists visiting Belagavi.
The traffic congestion that has been the major menace the city is facing due to presence of railway crossings will soon be over. For the easy traffic movement, four railway under-bridges, three road over bridges, multi-level parking, improvement of junctions, e-vigilance for safety and security of public have been planned.
To encourage cycling, reduce pollution and encourage pedestrians the authorities have also planned 407 kms of cycle track and 702 kms footpath. Moreover, to provide public transport facility to the people living in the suburban areas of the city, eight satellite based bus terminals will be built.
Measures to generate renewable energy in government offices and public utility places are being initiated under the smart city project. Now solar panels would be set up atop 80 per cent of the government offices. LED street lights will be installed to reduce energy consumption.
Moreover, in one of its ambitious plans, the authorities plan to supply CNG and PNG gas for domestic, commercial and industrial use through pipeline.
