The crime branch police team on Sunday arrested former cop Suraj Pendse for extorting Rs one lakh from a businessman pretending to be superintendent of police of the crime branch.
He used his ID to pose as a superintendent of police of the crime branch and also used former SP Mahesh Gaonkar's name as a reference to gain the confidence of the businessman.
Pendse was once appointed as a police constable, but he never took his postings, however, he has misused his police ID on several occasions.
A habitual offender, Pendse has been accused of cheating several people. Last year he was arrested by the Cyber Crime Cell of Goa Police in Pune for a similar crime. The former constable was accused of using his ID to loot people through marketing apps and social media.
A filmmaker had filed a complaint against Pendse of duping him to the tune of Rs 40,000 on the pretext of selling a car on a social media site.
