MARGAO
The existing arrangement between the Margao Municipal Council and Fomento will remain in force for a further period of 15 days as the MMC lawyer submitted before the South Goa district Court the steps initiated by the government to resolve the issue amicably with Fomento.
Hearing of the legal battle between the MMC and Fomento took place on Wednesday in the chamber of district Judge B P Deshpande after the legal counsel representing the civic body Adv S Padiyar reached the court late by around one hour and half.
After coming out of the chamber of the Judge, Adv Padiyar later told the media that the existing arrangement between the two parties, wherein the MMC will supply waste to Fomento and the latter will treat the waste at the Sonsodo waste treatment plant will continue for the next 15 days.
At the same time, he said the MMC will continue to pay Fomento Rs one lakh per day in lieu of treatment of municipal waste at the plant.
Replying to a query, Adv Padiyar said the MMC has sought further time from the Court to work out a solution with the Civic body on the grounds that the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant-led High Powered Coordination Committee has taken certain steps to work out an amicable solution with Fomento.
“Certain decisions taken by the HPCC at its last meeting were conveyed to the Court by the MMC, including the government’s plan to work out a solution by making some payments to Fomento,” Adv Padiyar added.
