MARGAO
Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has demanded to know why the Union Government is so keen in implementing the New Motor Vehicle Act 2019 in Goa when there are so many pressing issues like Mhadei, Special Status, resumption of mining, etc.
He has also sought to know why the BJP at the Centre is fleecing money from Goemkars to finance its haphazard and environment-unfriendly development projects in Goa.
In a statement, Reginaldo said Goemkars are perturbed with the recent statement of Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho that the Centre has pulled up the State government for failing to implement the amended MVA.
Reminding the Minister that MVA 2019 is not acceptable in its present form, the Curtorim MLA said the rules are not justifiable because it has been formed without application of mind. “The fines are too hefty and commoners would have to shell out their entire earnings for not carrying licence, not wearing seat belt, etc,” he said.
Saying the State government is following the ‘Gujarat Model’, Reginaldo demanded to know why Goa is following Gujarat Model in the amended MVA 2019? “Isn’t Goa a full-fledged independent State within the Indian Union? Can’t Goa have its own Motor Vehicle Act which suits the condition of the State,” he further demanded to know.
Saying that the road infrastructure is of pathetic nature and the roads full of potholes and death traps, he said many innocent road users are regularly losing their lives because of accidents caused by dangerous roads.
