The Congress on Wednesday used the International Film Festival of India to highlight the Mhadei issue and protest against Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) which is still

enforced in Goa due to the Ayodhya verdict.

It has been alleging that it cannot protest against the diversion of Mhadei water because of the law.

“We demand that Section 144 Goa be withdrawn immediately. The peoples’ right to protest is democratic and the government has no right to suppress the agitation to save the lifeline of Goa,” Varad Mardolkar, President of the Goa Youth Congress said.

The IFFI opening ceremony too was marred by protests when Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar was speaking.

Meanwhile, the digital campaign of the Congress, “Mhadei Jagor”, is going strong, with posters being issued daily and party leaders taking to Twitter to highlight the issue.

A poster especially released on Wednesday was to “once again convey the strong sentiments of Goans to Javadekar who is likely to attend the closing ceremony of IFFI,” Mardolkar said.
