Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes paid a surprise visit to different government offices at the Government Complex at Chaudi-Canacona and found 49 staff, including officers, of different departments missing from their seats during the second half of Wednesday.

An upset Fernandes later warned the officers and staff of strict disciplinary action if the errant employees did not ensure punctuality and continued to cause public inconveniences over their absence.

Speaking to The Goan, Fernandes said he visited the government complex, which also houses the offices of the deputy collector and mamlatdar of Canacona taluka, at about 3.30 pm.

“I saw a number of people, who had gone to get their work done, waiting in the complex in the hope that staff and officers would return to their seats. When I entered many offices, I found many empty seats of staff, including officers concerned,” said Fernandes.

When Fernandes questioned the staff present in the offices, he was told that some had gone out for inspections, while some were on training and others were on leave.

“I accounted for 49 missing staff, including officers of the rank of assistant engineer and junior engineers for the entire second half day of Wednesday,” said a visibly upset Fernandes.

According to sources, the WRD was the only office where the entire staff and officers were present, with the assistant engineer, junior engineers and other staff busy at their work.

In some other offices, most of the staff and offices were missing from their seats.

Sources said the deputy collector was on an inspection visit to Agonda, while most of the officers were absent in the Civil Supplies, Child Welfare, PWD (Roads), PWD (Buildings), Mamlatdar, BDO and other offices.

“I later warned the government staff to remain punctual and present in their offices and I will not take it lightly if habitual office bunking causes problems to the public.”

“I had checked the attendance registers for the day and found out that the staff were marked present but were not in their offices. I won’t tolerate such indiscipline and henceforth, the government will initiate disciplinary action,” warned the Canacona MLA.

The government complex at Canacona houses most government departments, except for a few offices like the Animal Husbandry, ADEI, Weights and Measures, which are located elsewhere in and around Chaudi town.
