Freedom fighter Nagesh Karmali on Wednesday warned central leaders not to visit Goa till the Mhadei issue is resolved in Goa’s interest.
He was addressing a gathering near the Bicholim government primary school at Bicholim market to create awareness on the Mhadei water diversion issue.
Speaking at the meeting, Karmali said Karnataka is planning to set up an illegal dam project by diverting Mhadei river water, which is a lifeline of Goa.
He also accused both Central and State governments for supporting Karnataka to gain political mileage in the forthcoming Karnataka elections to elect 15 BJP candidates.
He added that all MLAs and people should unite to protect Goa’s interest and added the state and the central governments will not be forgiven for this misdeed.
Prof Subhash Velingkar, Arvind Bhatikar, Gurunath Kelekar, Elvis Gomes, Atmaram Gaonkar, Pradeep Ghadi Amonkar, Pradeep Padgaonkar, Dheeraj Sawant, Bholanath Gad, Ramchandra Pal, Adv Swati Kerkar, Narayan Betkikar, Prof Deelip Dhargalkar and other leaders were also present at the meeting.
While criticizing the central and state government leaders, Prof Velingkar accused the central government of moving forward to strangle Goa for political self-interest.
“Goa would face devastating consequences and will turn into a desert if the Mhadei water is diverted. If the government does not listen to public concerns, it is time to send this government home,” added Prof Velingkar.
Elvis Gomes accused the BJP of selling Goa’s heritage for political gains. Arvind Bhatikar, Amrit Singh, Milind Gawas, Babuso Gaonkar, Srikrishna Dhond, Nisar Shaikh, Shailesh Fatarpekar and others also spoke at the meeting.
