Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the approach roads to the Seraulim road under pass near the Seraulim level crossing, kick-starting the long awaited project estimated to cost around Rs 9.5 crore.
While the Road under Pass (RUB) will cost the Goa government and the railways Rs 7.30 crore, the Goa government will bear the total cost of Rs 2.22 crore towards the construction of the 500 meter approach roads on both sides of the RUB.
Launching the works in the presence of Seraulim sarpanch Domingo Rodrigues, panch members and former sarpanchas on Wednesday, Churchill said he has fulfilled one of his election promises made to the people of Seraulim in the 2017 election.
“So many MLAs in the past only fooled the people with empty promises. There were people who were demanding a flyover at the level crossing, but I thought that the road under pass is a better option in the given situation,” he said.
While expressing his gratitude to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for sanctioning the project, Churchill said though he is not part of the coalition government, the Chief Minister has been kind enough to sanction funds for the project.
He pointed out that the state government has already deposited its 50 per cent share of the project cost amounting to Rs 3.65 crore to the railways, adding work on the road under pass will commence soon.
Village Sarpanch Domingo Rodrigues said the Road under pass is a dream come to for the villagers of Seraulim and neighbouring villages. “This is a big day for the people of Seraulim. The project has become a reality after the local MLA took keen interest and after pursuing the same with the government”, he added.
Former Sarpanchas Polly D’Cruz, Agnelo Fernandes, Dourado, besides Seema Shanke and others thanked the Benaulim MLA for making the project possible.
