Kanekar formally entered the Congress on Friday evening, a day after Vishwajit Rane joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Speaking to The Goan, All India Congress Committee secretary Girish Chodankar confirmed the entry of Kanekar.
Responding to a query about the position of the Congress after the exit of its duly elected MLA from Valpoi, who will now contest on BJP ticket, Chodankar stated, “Congress party has a strong base in Valpoi and is all set to defeat Rane in the upcoming by-election restoring the tally back to 17 in the House.”
Chodankar alleged that Viswajit, in his opportunistic move, has projected the people of Valpoi as his bonded labour, who will rally behind him, no matter which party he joins.
“What is shocking is the claim of Vishwajit that he has resigned from Congress because people from his constituency wanted him to do so. This is an absolute lie. The real truth is that the people were never taken into confidence by Vishwajit while resigning,” said Chodankar.
Meanwhile, Congress is gearing up to consult its party workers in order to reconstitute the PCC block, Mahila Block, Youth Block, Seva Dal, Minority cell and booth committees over the coming days. “Some 400 people at the most joined BJP with Vishwajit. He doesn’t have the support enough to make 1,000 Congressmen follow him to his doom, as he has claimed,” Chodankar quipped.
