Former Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson Rama Honnaverkar (67) was stabbed and critically wounded by a neighbour in broad daylight at Headland, Sada on Saturday morning.
The accused, Nilesh Honnaverkar (46) was later arrested by Mormugao police station for attempt to murder under Section 307 of IPC.
Nilesh used a knife to stab Rama twice on his chest and shoulders in broad daylight and in full public view, sending shock waves across the entire taluka.
According to eye witnesses, Rama was proceeding towards Vasco on his scooter (GA-06-C-9142), when he was stopped by the accused near the Sada junction.
In a flash and before Rama could realise what was happening, Nilesh allegedly stabbed Rama with a knife concealed in a plastic bag, leaving Rama profusely bleeding and seriously injured.
The accused, Nilesh, then fled from the scene, leaving behind the bloody knife.
Onlookers rushed to Rama’s aid shifted him to Chicalim Cottage Hospital. He was later moved to GMC, where he is presently undergoing treatment and is considered to be in a critical condition.
Mormugao police led by PI Shailesh Narvekar and PSI Melito Fernandes rushed to the site and later nabbed Nilesh.
Sources at Headland Sada disclosed that Nilesh had attacked Rama on previous occasions. Speaking to reporters, Milind Revankar, a relative of Rama, confirmed this. “Rama still has a scar near the eye from the last time Nilesh attacked him. We had registered a police complaint and also informed his family. However, they must have taken our request lightly. I request the police to take serious action against Nilesh,” said Revankar.
Confirming the arrest, Mormugao DySP Sunita Sawant said Mormugao police acted on a complaint by Anant Honnaverkar and the accused, Nilesh was arrested under Section 307 IPC for attempt to murder.
