The Mapusa civic body will soon install 16 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to address the city’s growing safety and security concerns.
Initially, the plans were to install seven new surveillance cameras but the council has thought it fit to increase the number 16.
“We are installing 16
new CCTV units at various places at the city centre. The work of installing the cameras is expected to be completed before Chaturthi,” Chairperson Ryan Braganza informed.
The chairperson said that a company by the name of Barco Tech has bagged the tender to install the cameras at a cost of Rs 4.80 lakh.
The cameras will be installed along the route from Gandhi Chowk, Hutatma chowk, Hanuman temple, taxi-stand, Corporation bank and mamlatdar’s office.
The monitoring station of the cameras will be at the Mapusa police station.
Hailing the decision to install the additional surveillance cameras, PI Tushar Lotlikar said it was a good move and will definitely help policing in the city.
“The CCTV system will instill fear and deter local criminals. It will also come handy to identify an offender involved in a crime,” PI Lotlikar said.
The chairperson informed that the defunct cameras in the market have been repaired and all are now in working condition.
It may be recalled that seven such closed circuit television cameras were installed in the Mapusa municipal market at least three years ago.
One camera each was
installed at the main entrance of the Mapusa market, opposite the Bata showroom in Sirsat building and at the entrance to the Mapusa market from the KTC bus stand side.
The other four were installed at strategic points inside the main market.
