Organic farming could open new doors for Goa’s cashew producers. At a technical session held on the sidelines of the ongoing Goa Cashew Fest, experts highlighted the rising global demand for organic agricultural products and urged local growers to seize the opportunity.

Organic cashew farmer Agnelo Barreto said nearly 80 to 90 per cent of Goa’s cashew production is primarily organic in nature, with no chemical products  used.

“This is a golden chance for our farmers. With proper marketing, organic cashews can bring significant economic benefits,” he told participants.

Barreto shared his own experience of abandoning chemical herbicides. While weeds were controlled initially, cashew yields dropped by 60 per cent within a few years, and coconut trees were also affected. He said it took five to eight years for the soil to recover once chemicals were stopped.

“The lesson is clear. Chemicals may give short-term relief but cause long-term damage. Organic farming is the way forward,” he stressed.

He also called for government policies to support organic cultivation and earn better prices for organic produce.

“Only then will the younger generation be attracted to farming,” he added.

Goa's Government Agricultural College Principal Dr Suresh Kunkolkar said organic cashew farming has strong prospects and noted that organic methods preserve the distinct taste of Goan cashews, reduce costs, and enhance nutritional value.

Using compost, animal manure, and leaf litter as fertilizers can sustain production, he said.

Experts agreed that with careful planning, Goa’s farmers can position themselves strongly in the global organic market.
