To avert fire tragedies

Regular maintenance of all circuit breakers must be carried out, as seen in the shop that was completely gutted in the New Market at Margao. It is of utmost importance that these circuit breakers are serviced and checked periodically. Old and worn-out wiring systems can lead to short circuits, overheating, and fires. Outdated electrical wiring, some without proper earthing, is highly risky. Such wires can easily catch fire, causing damage and loss. Fires that begin in one shop can quickly spread to neighbouring shops, as they are closely packed with hardly any gaps in between.

In some areas, proper high-grade, non-inflammable roofing has not been installed. This must be done on a priority basis. Although some work was carried out earlier, the entire market area was not covered. This incomplete roofing makes the market more vulnerable to fires, leading to severe losses. The services of a renowned electrical engineer should be employed to address this dangerous situation.

The use of high-grade, heavy-duty copper wiring throughout the market is essential to prevent such incidents. Surge protectors should be used to guard against power surges. Overloading must be avoided, and care should be taken not to exceed circuit capacity by connecting too many devices. The correct capacity fuses or circuit breakers should always be used. All wiring should ideally be placed in underground conduits or protective ducts, away from any digging activity.

Due to fuel shortages in the market, many may turn to electrical appliances such as induction stoves, increasing the load on electrical systems. These appliances should be regularly maintained. Multimeters can be used to measure voltage, current, and resistance to identify faults. Loose or corroded connections should be checked and secured. Fire-resistant cables should be used wherever possible. It is also important to check for overheating and ensure proper ventilation to disperse heat.

Routine maintenance of fire safety equipment, such as extinguishers, must be carried out. Emergency systems should be regularly checked, and exit routes must always remain clear of any obstruction in case of a fire.
