Explosion in Cuncolim unit leaves one dead

The Cuncolim Industrial Estate was once again in the news on Monday after an explosion rocked an unit in the industrial estate killing a young labourer, a native of Bihar.

Though reports were doing the rounds that two other workers employed in the unit also sustained injuries, the Cuncolim police said only a lone worker was injured, who later succumbed to his injuries on the way to Hospicio hospital.

The incident occurred at around 3 pm when the workers were in the process of stacking oxygen cylinders when one of them exploded. The impact of the blast was so intense that one of the two workers, who were nearby, was injured in the incident.

DySP Harish Madkaikar gave the name of the deceased as 26-year old Sudhir Kumar. Cuncolim Police station in-charge, PI Theron D’Costa, who rushed to the factory scanned the CCTV footage that captured the incident. 

He said the they have intimated the Inspectorate of Factories & Boilers, which is expected to conduct an inquiry. PI Theron said another worker who was not very far from the deceased escaped without injuries.
