CANACONA
The Chaudi member of the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) has criticised the continuation of Chaudi Church feast for the second week, claiming that the fair has been causing inconvenience highway traffic and general public while also generating garbage.
“Neither the CMC not I as ward councillor was taken into confidence in this matter and stalls for the feast fair have been positioned on both sides of NH17, creating an unwanted nuisance and blockage of the highway till Nagarcem,” said Chaudi councilor Chaya (Bharati) Soiru Komarpant.
“Authorities had taken a decision without paying any heed to the CMC, but the fair could have been for a maximum of 3-4 days. The continuation of the feast fair for the second week after the feast on January 14 has been causing inconvenience to motorists.”
“Yesterday, an ambulance shifting a patient who had suffered a heart attack had to halt for several minutes on account of the feast stalls.”
“While the Sopo contractor is benefiting the most, even the church body was not allowed to collect donations which they traditionally used to collect every year,” said Komarpant.
Komarpant also raised queries about the collection of garbage after the fair is over.
“No one knows who will have to remove the huge heaps of garbage that will be left behind by these stalls, the councillor said.
Komarpant has blamed the taluka administration for remaining silent and for allowing the Sopo collector to benefit at the cost of public safety and concerns.
“We want the feast stalls to stop their trade without any further delay,” demanded Komarpant.
