MARGAO
Asserting that it was the responsibility of every Goan to protect their mother tongue Konkani, Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude said that tiatrists enjoy the full freedom to bring before the people the misdeeds of the politicians and political figures through the medium of tiatr.
He was speaking at the felicitation of eminent tiatrists with the lifetime contribution to tiatr awards 2018 at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.
The event was organised by Tiatr Academy of Goa in association with Ravindra Bhavan, Margao and it also marked the birth anniversary of Pat Tiatrist Joao Agostinho Fernandes.
The minister said that English language may have been adopted by the people for the purpose of communication and business, but people should not forget Konkani. “We should be proud of our mother tongue. It is not only the duty of everyone to protect the mother tongue, but to pass it on to the future generations,” he said, adding that this can be achieved through the medium of tiatr.
He said tiatr has been a powerful medium to convey social messages through the years. “Tiatrists should enjoy the freedom to criticize the politicians and their misdeeds. There is no harm when politicians are criticized from the platform of art. The artists should enjoy the freedom to bring before the people the misdeeds of the politicians,” he added.
On the occasion, eminent tiatrists Menino Fernandes, Salvador S Fernandes, Milagres Fernandes, Roque A Dias and Domingo S Rodrigues were honoured with the lifetime contribution to tiatr awards.
