Farm bills: Congress plans stir, 'Chalo Rajbhavan Protest March' on Monday

PANAJI
The Congress in Goa announced it will go on an agitational mode against the controversial farm bills passed in parliament kicking it off with a 'Chalo Rajbhavan Protest March' on Monday next.

A memorandum urging withdrawal of the bills addressed to the President Ram Nath Kovind will be handed over to the Governor, said State Congress president Girish Chodankar at a press conference where he was flanked by Opposition Leader Digamber Kamat and former Union Law Minister Ramakant Khalap.

Kamat said the legislations will bring in an agro-economy regime in the country which will "completely destroy" farmers.

He said the bills were passed "undemocratically" in Parliament riding roughshod over the Opposition's request for a division and instead resorting controversially to a 'voice vote'.

Other protest actions lined up by the Opposition party include a signature campaign against the bills and a farmer 'samnelan' on October 10 at Rivona.

Kamat, who has in the past headed Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee, said the bills will be a death knell to these mechanisms which provide farmers a level playing field against price manipulation and predatory buying of their produce by traders.

Betel nut, cashew and coconut producers in Goa will be affected, he said.

Khalap meanwhile said the Central government's dubious move will reverse the green revolution which has come about over the decades in the country.
