He was speaking at the ‘Krishi Melava 2017’ organized by the Department of Agriculture in association with Porvorim Youth Welfare Trust and Zonal Agriculture Office, Mapusa, at Socorro.
“Goan farmers are hard working and not averse to modern and progressive ideas. As per the statistics available, 11% of the people are doing farming in Goa. There is much scope to export agricultural produce like vegetable and paddy to neighbouring states. This is possible if farmers take interest in farming,” he said.
“Farmers should avail benefits of the subsidies and increase production of crops by adopting improved methods of cultivation,” added Sardessai.
Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte said farmers should do farming in scientific manner using modern technology. “The farmers find it difficult to get labour in Goa at reasonable rates for paddy cultivation. Hence, farming has become uneconomical for the marginal farmers,” he said.
“The government is giving subsidies to purchase farming equipments and machines. The usage of these machines will reduce the dependency of farmers on labourers and minimize their cost.”
“The youth of today are not inclined to do farming and they prefer white collared jobs,” the minister said and added that the agriculture department should motivate these youth to take up farming profession.
“Within next 3 months, Mundkar Act will be amended as desired by the farmers and tenancy cases will be settled on fast track basis,” said Khaunte.
