MARGAO
Officials of the Food and Drug Administration descended at Goa's lone wholesale fish market on early Saturday morning to check the quality of fish sold in the market, even as fish merchants maintained that only fresh fish is being brought in the market via insulated vehicles.
The fish merchants contended that the government should also take up the re-construction of the wholesale fish market and rid the market of the stench and stink.
The FDA officials collected samples of ice, water and fish as part of the investigations. The officials pointed out that the samples will be tested in the FDA laboratory before submitting the report to the officials for necessary action. A number of plastic boxes containing fish brought by trucks from across the border were checked by the officials. The action follows directions issued by the Fisheries Minister Vinod Palienkar to check the quality of fish, ice and water at the wholesale fish market and other fish markets.
IN the meantime, fish merchants contended that they bring in fresh fish in insulated vehicles, while demanding that the government bring a turn around in the wholesale fish market. "The wholesale fish market is Goa's lone wholesale fish market. We bring in fresh fish. Our vehicles are insulated and the fish is stored in ice", maintained president of Wholesale fish Association M Ibrahim.
He, however, said that more the freshness of fish, the government should focus its attention to bring about a turn around in the market conditions. "The market is stinking. People are forced to walk in muck in the market", he said, while pinning hopes on TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai to build a modern wholesale fish market.
Other fish merchants pointed out that they procure the ice to preserve the fish from the ice plants, adding that the FDA should collect samples of ice from the ice plants instead of the wholesale fish market.
