FDA orders shutdown of canteen, hotel in Mapusa

Authorities find the two eateries in unhygienic condition; one had no permission to run biz

MAPUSA
The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Thursday issued order to close down the canteen of Agnel Institute at Assagao and Hotel Panchaganga at Mapusa for unhygienic conditions.
According to FDA senior food safety officer Rajiv Korde, the FDA officials inspected the canteen of Agnel Institute operated by Reshma Tivrekar.
"The officials found that the contractor Tivrekar was running the campus canteen without taking any permission and the canteen was in unhygienic condition. The food items and vegetables were kept in a rusted refrigerator, which is not in working condition," said Korde.
The officials also found the premises filthy and foul smell was emitting in the canteen. The officials issued an order to the contractor Tivrekar and Institute principal K Marriapan to close down the canteen from Thursday.
Later in the evening, the FDA officials inspected the Panchaganga Hotel at KTC bus stand Mapusa. During the inspection, the officials found the kitchen filthy and water was leaking from the slab of the kitchen, while the soak pit behind the hotel was found open and foul smell emanated from it.
Two months back, the hotel owner was instructed to keep the premises clean and repair the building. However, as the hotel owner failed to take any steps, the FDA officials issued him the order of closing down the hotel.
FDA officials Flavia Dias, Atul Dessai, Madhav Kavlekar, Shruti Pilenkar and staff Pradeep Parsekar inspected the premises of the canteen and the hotel under the guidance of Korde.
Speaking to The Goan, Panchaganga Hotel owner Mahesh Narvekar said he had requested the KTC authorities to undertake repairs of the hotel after he was served the notice from the FDA ordering to repair the premises.
