Following the recent public outrage over detection of contaminated foods items for sale, the FDA on Saturday continued its inspections and raided the weekly Saturday market, seizing and destroying various eatables from many temporary stalls which did not confirm to foods safety norms.
The goods worth Rs 60,000 seized included items such as chilly powder, biscuits, shevio, farsan and various other items. These items were later destroyed at the municipal garbage plant. According to reports, officials from FDA raided the weekly Canacona Chaudi market and seized various items not conforming to food safety norms.
The makeshift kiosks set up for weekly market at Chaudi of several vendors were searched and the FDA team seized several food items found violating rules on packing, food colours, labelling, hygiene etc. During the course of inspection, it was found that vendors were found selling loose masala and without any labels, as mandatory under the act. Samples of chilly and turmeric powder was drawn and directions were issued not to deal with sale of loose powder spices. It was also found that chilly and turmeric powder were found with non-permitted colours and a vendor undertook to destroy them voluntarily.
Some vendors were also found selling fryums and kurkure having with non-permitted food colours.
It may be recalled that some alert residents had raised an alarm after noticing sale of contaminated sweets at a sweetmeat shop. The residents had also found thousands of fruits being artificially ripened in the market on another occasion.
