CANACONA
The Canacona Municipal Council’s (CMC) threat to demolish two illegally erected kiosks prompted some persons to dismantle the structures on Wednesday.
According to sources, unknown persons had erected two kiosks near the fish market at Chaudi on Saturday night. Two kiosks were placed at a site where a vegetable market building was demolished to make way for a new fish market.
People noticed both kiosks on Sunday morning and believed that the kiosks had been erected at the site without any knowledge and licence from the civic body.
Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chief Officer Sagun Velip, who is Dy Collector of Canacona, was alerted of the structures barely metres from the CMC office and directed the removal of the structures within two days.
With the kiosks still at the site, Velip then directed the municipal engineer to demolish the kiosks on Wednesday.
When a CMC demolition squad armed with a JCB reached the site to carry out the demolition, some persons approached the CMC team and sought a few minutes dismantle the structures.
Sources said while one smaller kiosk was removed and taken away, the larger kiosk was dismantled with the help of welder and kept aside to be taken away.
Sources informed the illegality had been allegedly carried out in connivance with some councillors, who reportedly reportedly backed out after the chief officer put his foot down and sent a team to demolish the structures.
