VASCO: Besides threatening to impose fines on those caught dumping garbage, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief officer Agnelo Fernandes has even appealed to people to file police complaints if they catch people in the act.
Speaking to reporters, Fernandes said the municipal council has initiated a number of measures to tackle garbage in the municipality.
“The MMC has decided to closely monitor the Sada Garbage Treatment Plant and has decided to put round-the-clock security at the site in a few days time.”
“The work order to construct a compound wall at the plant has been tendered and the contractor has been given 60 days to construct a new compound wall. The MMC is also imposing the penal provision, which includes fines on those found dumping garbage.”
Stating that MMC has been doing its best to tackle garbage, Fernandes blamed people for failing in their civic duties.
“Awareness talks and seminars are useless as citizens do not take necessary steps. Mixed garbage is still seen scattered without being segregated. As many as 25 bulk generators were issued notices but response has been poor.”
“Anyone who finds garbage scattered should file a police complaint as a responsible citizen and forward me a copy for further action. Citizen should also realise their civic and moral duty as the council cannot be expected to do everything.”
“We have exhausted our resources. People should file a police complaint against the offenders,” added Fernandes.
“When food is mine, garbage is mine, house is mine and environment is mine, why should garbage management not be mine,” asked the chief officer.
