Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar on Saturday said the council had decided to have dedicated sites in every ward to treat wet waste, to reduce the load on the garbage treatment plant at Sada and to help tackle the garbage issue.

Gaonkar was speaking to reporters after conducting a joint inspection of the treatment plant at Sada on Saturday.

“Garbage is becoming a major issue because we were not receiving segregated garbage. We have thus decided to impose fines and penalties on those who still hand over unsegregated garbage. We also had a meeting with Directorate of Municipal Administration and decided that hotels who do not offer segregated garbage could face disconnection of power and water.”

“Besides a site inspection of treatment plant, we also inspected the BITS Pilani biogas plant which can treat 5 tonnes of wet waste. This is on trial basis but will be operational in a few days and the capacity will also be enhanced.”

Following a meeting with the DMA, the council had been instructed to look for dedicated ward-wise sites, so that wet waste of the particular ward can be treated there itself.

“We get around 35 tonnes of wet waste per day and all councillors should provide an area of around 150 sqm so that we have a shed and can clear wet waste into compost there itself. This will help reduce the load at the garbage treatment plant,” said Gaonkar.

“We have identified a few sites for this proposal. If we can use one corner of the huge prime land, earlier in possession of Dev Damodar Trust, the entire wet waste of the market can be cleared on a daily basis. Similarly, we can also use a corner of the land-filled sites opposite Hotel Tanya for the same purpose. If all cooperate with us, Vasco can be garbage-free soon,” said Gaonkar.
