Allaying apprehensions of some filmmakers regarding the availability of jobs once film city becomes a reality, Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Dessai on Saturday claimed the project will create around 5,000 job opportunities within five years.

“In the first five years of its operation, the film city will create a substantial number of jobs… at least 5,000 jobs. It will also have positive ripple effects in the tourism sector and other related areas through which the stakeholders and the State will largely benefit,” the minister said, confirming that around 10 lakh sq mtrs of comunidade land near Bhagwati plateau in Canacona is earmarked for the project.

He emphasised that film city was originally the vision of ex-Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar. Phal Dessai also revealed that Canacona locals are enthusiastic about the new project.

“Several people offered to give their land for this project and one such proposal was from Canacona. The local community in Canacona is enthusiastic about the prospect of having a film city in their taluka and we are looking forward to having one,” he added.

Speaking further, the minister highlighted the impact on the development of film culture in Goa stating that it would provide a platform for these artists and creative minds to explore their potential.

Earlier, some filmmakers suggested that if the film city becomes a reality, the government should ensure the provision of facilities such as soundstages, religious sites, temporary sets, training institutions, and open-air theatres among other facilities including employment opportunities to locals.
