The accused LDC was placed under arrest on Monday evening under various sections of the IPC, including cheating and forgery.Margao Police station in-charge PI C L Patil told the media that the police have arrested the LDC after it came to light that he entered the birth data of two persons, including Renuka Tehsildar when he was not connected with the birth registration office. PI Patil said the LDC had no right to enter the data in the birth registration office when he was attached to the municipal taxation office. “Besides, the police have found incriminating material during investigation which suggests the involvement of many persons,” he said.When asked to specify the exact role played by the accused in the racket, the PI said the police would interrogate the LDC to find out the conspiracy angle, if any.To another question, Patil said the police suspect the involvement of at least three more persons in the racket. We will arrest all the accused involved in the case, he added. When asked why the police has till date not arrested Renuka Tehsildar against whom the police have registered an offence of cheating, forgery and impersonation, he said the accused had moved the court for anticipatory bail. The bail application is pending in court, he stated.The Margao police action on Monday assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact that the men-in-uniform had drawn flak for going slow against the accused persons upon pressure from the powers that be.In fact, though the Margao police had registered an offence against the accused more than a month ago, they had been slow in laying their hands on the accused persons. The police acted on a complaint by an elderly couple from Benaulim Agostinho and Maria Fernandes, who had rented the house to Renuka, a native of Karnataka since the last three years. Only recently, the duo found to their shock and surprise that Renuka and a youth had registered their marriage with Renuka giving her name as Rita Agostinho Fernandes and the youth Arogya as Arogya Fernandes.
