Director of Municipal Administration Ashok Kumar, had to intervene to request Mario to take charge of office only in the afternoon session after the ousted chairperson is allowed to take her personal things from the office.
Lavita was voted out of office by 7-5 votes, indicating that the five-member BJP group, which had bailed her out last time round, was split vertically, with two members Polita Carneiro and Premdeep Desai supporting the no-confidence motion.
Immediately after the motion was carried by 7-5 votes, Mario went and sat on the chairperson’s chair, even as Lavita cried foul, saying that his decision to occupy the seat is an offence to the Chair. She sought time to clear her personal things from office, a request which was turned down by Mario.
Plea by the Chief Officer Gaonkar to the Vice-Chairperson to give the ousted chairperson some time to clear her personal belonging also proved futile with Mario insisting that there cannot be any personal belongings in a public office.
Mario, however, later relented after the Director of Municipal Administration Ashok Kumar spoke to him over the Chief Officer’s cell phone, requesting him to allow the outgoing chairperson to take her personal things.
He later told the media that he would not remain in the chairperson’s chair even for a moment after the vacant post is filled up next week.
Replying to a question, Mario said that he would quit the post of Vice Chairperson after the election of the new chairperson to make way for councillor Shashank Desai to take over the reigns as Municipal Vice-Chairperson.
Angry citizens threaten to move
DMA for dissolution of CMC
MARGAO: With the Cuncolim civic body down with political instability since the last one year and half, angry citizens pointed out that they will have no option than to move the Director of Municipal Administration for the dissolution of the Municipal body.
Social activist from Cuncolim, Lorna Fernandes cried foul over the constant tabling of the no-confidence motions against the chairperson and the vice-chairperson over the last few months. “People of Cuncolim had elected the councillors to look after the civic needs of the citizens and not to get involved in the toppling games. The time is running out for the City Fathers to get down to work and provide basic civic amenities to the people,” she said.
Lorna warned that people will have no option than to move the concerned authorities to dissolve the municipal body in the event the political instability and musical chair games continue in the civic body.
