Finally, the e-waste that had accumulated in the stores of the Margao Municipal Council was disposed of by an agency designated by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC).
The e-waste had accumulated in the corridors of the civic body adjoining the chamber of the MMC Chairperson a year ago. The waste was later shifted to the municipal storeroom near the toilet block on the ground floor of the building.
Sources in the civic body pointed out that the e-waste had piled up over the years and the same was attributed to the lethargic attitude of some of the employees.
In fact, sources said the disposal of the e-waste has been an issue in the corridors of the civic body since the property was partly owned by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (SGUDA), which had in the past funded the computers and accessories to the civic body.
MMC Chairperson Lyndon Pereira, who monitored the disposal of the e-waste, told the media that the disposal of the waste will create the much-needed space in the Civic body to cater to the growing requirements. “The e-waste has been lying in the civic premises for many years now. There was a problem of disposal of the waste since the property was owned by GSUDA. Finally, we have got the e-waste disposed of through an agency designated by the GWMC,” he said. Representatives of the agency told The Goan that the agency will be accepting the e-waste upon payment of prescribed fees to the civic body. “The waste will then be treated and disposal as per the guidelines”, the representative said.
