After having to put up with dug up and broken roads due to the ongoing sewerage works, residents of Mapusa are finally in for some good days as authorities have taken up repair and hot-mixing of some roads in the town.
While the road in St Sebastian-vaddo in Ward 11 has got a fresh coat of full grout, many key lanes at Angod in Ward 9 have got a layer of hot mix.
“Most of the roads in my wards have been repaired and also received a coat of hot mix. I am quite happy with the quality of the work,” said Ryan Braganza, the local councilor. “More importantly I ensured that maximum width of the roads in my ward was covered with hot mix,” he added.
PWD authorities expect to complete most of the road works assigned to them before the onset of the monsoon.
“Some roads in Mapsua are being done by the PWD and some by the GSUDA. We will complete works that have been tendered through our department,” said Jose Carvalho, PWD Assistant Engineer, who looks after the roads in Mapusa.
But not everyone is happy with the way the road repairs have been done in Mapusa. Those in the know have pointed out that required processes have not been followed while repairing the dug up roads.
“The officials who are carrying the repairs have not done compacting of the roads. Compacting has to be done in layers. After refilling the dug up roads with mud, you need to use a lot of water and then use compacter over it,” said Agnel Oliveira, a civil engineer, who has his office in Mapusa.
“After the monsoon you will see depressions on most of the roads, mostly around the sewerage chambers,” he added.
Although some roads are in the process of repair, there are many key streets that are yet to be taken up.
Works are yet to be taken up on the roads opposite to the Mapusa court in Altinho, Gaunsa-vaddo and in the area around the main market.

MAPUSA: It was the power of social media that compelled authorities and the local councillor to take steps to finish the task on hand.
Unable to remove a vehicle from its parking spot, PWD officials went ahead and completed hot mixing of the road in Angod, near Alankar leaving the area under the stationary vehicle incomplete.
The picture of the incomplete work was uploaded on WhatsApp and went viral in no time.
The local councillor and others immediately went on an overdrive and made frantic efforts to locate the driver of the tempo.
After frantic efforts, the driver traced and the vehicle was removed from the spot. The remaining was then soon completed.
