A fire broke out at a rice shop near the mosque on Thane Road in Valpoi at around 5 am on Monday.
According to reports, smoke and flames were noticed coming from the shop owned by Mohammad Sharif Khan, following which the fire brigade was alerted. A Valpoi fire brigade led by Leading Fire Fighter Satish K Naik reached the spot at around 5 am and immediately began efforts to extinguish the fire.
The fire is estimated to have caused damage worth approximately Rs 25,000 to goods and materials in the shop, while the fire brigade saved property worth around Rs 5 lakh, according to fire service officials.
As the fire was brought under control at an early stage, a potential threat to neighbouring shops and properties was also avoided. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained and further investigation is underway.
