Fire engulfs house at Curtorim, 70-yr-old gets burn injuries

A major fire engulfed a residential house at Curtorim in the wee hours of Monday, leaving the 70-year old owner injured and destroying property worth over Rs 7 lakh.

In another fire incident around the same time, two kiosks located at Benaulim were engulfed by fire, causing estimated loss of Rs 3 lakh.

Margao Fire Officer Gill D’Sa informed that the house owner, Caetano Fernandes sustained burn injuries on his hand, legs and back. He was rushed to the Curtorim primary health centre by an ambulance, from where he was shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.

Gill informed that the residential house located near the Leprosy hospital was gutted in the major fire on early Monday morning. He said rafters, ribs and roof tiles of the house were damaged in the fire. An outhouse, which was being used as a store room, also caught fire, he said. Around three fire tenders were used in the firefighting operations, with the fire brigade requisitioning fire tender from the Curchorem fire station.

The fire officer said that property including household goods, including refrigerators were destroyed in the inferno. He, however, said the fire personnel managed to remove the LPG cylinders besides gold ornaments from the house. Preliminary estimate has pegged the loss on account of destruction to property to Rs 7 lakh, Gill said, adding that the loss of property could be much higher.
