VALPOI
A cashew plantation was gutted in a fire at Mauxi in Sattari, damaging property worth about Rs 3 lakh.
Speaking to reporters, the plantation owner Namdev Rane blamed the fire on a fault in the overhead electricity lines, which destroyed about 250 trees in his plantation.
“We have a large cashew plantation along the road between Valpoi and Mauxi. We have about 300 trees which have yielded us good income,” said Rane.
“The power line above our plantations were old and we had requested the electricity office to remove this power line from the area. But no attention was paid to our request. Now, this major fire has destroyed out plantation,” complained Rane.
“This incident would not have happened today if they had removed the power line had been fulfilled. About 250 cashew nut plantation trees have been burnt and we have suffered a loss of Rs 3 lakh.”
A fire tender from the Valpoi Fire Station was involved in a two-hour operation to extinguish the fire.
