Mormugao sees demand for fancy numbers

Vasco RTO earns Rs 60 lakh in 2022 only on fancy, VIP registration numbers

Motorists in Mormugao seems to have taken a fancy to fancy registration numbers for their vehicles, as the Vasco RTO earned revenue of as much as Rs 60 lakh only on issuing fancy and VIP registration numbers in 2022.  

Speaking to media persons on Thursday, Vasco RTO Assistant Director of Transport Rajesh Naik many vehicles, including two-wheelers, four-wheelers and other types of vehicles, had been registered in 2022.  

“Among them, 160 two-wheeler and four-wheeler owners have taken fancy numbers for their vehicles, earning the Vasco RTO a total of Rs 60.59 lakh,” said Naik.  

“The trend of having fancy numbers is rising and in January this year, 20 motorists had obtained fancy numbers and Rs 65,000 was deposited with the transport department.”  

“Some people consider the old registration number as lucky and seek the same number. Some choose their own, birthdays of parents or children and wedding dates, while some take VIP numbers like 1111, 7777, 1234, etc.,” said Naik.  

He informed that in 2021, 108 motorists had obtained fancy numbers from new vehicle registrations in Vasco and a total of Rs 33.24 lakh was earned as fees for these fancy numbers plates.  

“However, our revenue increased by Rs 27.35 lakhs in 2022 on the registration of fancy and VIP number plates, with the takers increasing to 160. A total of 5,399 new vehicles were registered by the Vasco RTO in 2022, which included 3,437 two-wheelers, 1,518 four-wheelers, 218 taxis and 226 other vehicles.”  

“Of these, 160 motorists obtained fancy and preferred VIP registration numbers, earning us a revenue of Rs 60.59 lakh,” said Naik.
