With rainwater cutting off access to houses in Paroda, firefighters were called upon to shift the body of a senior citizen who died on Friday.
Most parts of Paroda village were affected due to incessant rains and many houses were cut off from road access due to rainwater around the houses.
In one of the affected houses, a senior citizen, Gajanan Padiyar, passed away and family members were unable to move the body to the Margao crematorium for final rites.
The incident was reportedly brought to the notice of Minister for Social Welfare Subhash Phaldessai who immediately called on the fire brigade personnel.
Speaking to media persons, Phaldessai said he received a call from Siddesh Padiyar informing him about the death of his father Gajanan Padiyar at Paroda and the difficulties the family is facing due to flooded roads all around Paroda village.
“Soon after the call, I contacted the Director of Fire Services Nitin Raiker and local Fire Officer incharge Damodar Zambaulikar, who immediately rushed with his team to Paroda,” said Phaldessai.
Firefighters went to the site and used a boat to transport the body and the immediate relatives. They later helped the family members of the deceased to take the body to Margao crematorium for final rites.
Meanwhile, the main road to Margao from Quepem continued to remain underwater throughout the day at Paroda.
The whole stretch of road from Paroda junction to Chandreshwar Temple junction was flooded. The traffic from Sanguem and Quepem proceeding to Margao was diverted via Chandor.
Meanwhile, at Paroda, several houses remained under water due to the flooding of the Kushawati river.
At Avedem, Paroda Zilla Panchayat Member Sidharth Dessai assured to come up with an immediate solution of constructing a drain in the village to connect the near drain to avoid flooding of some five houses in the area.
