Responding to claims by Vasco fish market vendors that they would not give their approval to the proposed Vasco fish market till a new set of councillors are elected, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Nandadeep Raut said fish vendors have been misguided for political mileage.

"The process to build the new fish market has been taken up after all necessary approvals and formalities and there could be a misunderstanding or someone is misguiding vendors for political mileage,” Raut told reporters.

“The Form D of the property is in MMC’s name, which proves our ownership. The council may change in a few months but the resolution taken by the previous council for a development project cannot be changed.”

The MMC chairperson said the chief minister, urban development minister and Vasco MLA were also involved in this project, which is now a government project.

“This project is valued at Rs 10 crore and some political parties are jealous and trying to stop this dream project.”

“We will build the project as per needs of fish vendors and they can approach me directly in case they have any issues and we can explain to them. Funds have been transferred to GSUDA only after DMA approvals specifically for the fish market project.”

“The MMC has also resolved their demands of stopping people selling fish outside the market and PI Nilesh Rane has given us all his support. We have stopped all roadside vendors," said Raut.
